So, what's up with the boundaries?

Boundaries, for the Metropolitan Scooters, are in place for your safety, and to help maintain the scooter' mechanical integrity. Boundaries keep you from going into areas that are too steep, too fast, or at too high an altitude.

INSURANCE WON'T COVER YOU OUT OF BOUNDS: Going out of bounds not only breaks the Zootscoot contract you sign, but our insurance, as well as yours won't cover you when you are in breech of contract.

YOU'VE BEEN WARNED

Too Steep: The scooters run on drive belts, and if a hill is too steep to climb, it can wear that belt out leaving you rolling backwards. Brakes could fail. Also, the engine could burn out from trying to pull you up that hill. Regardless, it's not good for the scooters at all. Going to GLEN HAVEN would be an example of a hill that is too steep. Coming back up the switchbacks, the scooters will only do 8mph and that is far too slow, and the scooter works too darn hard to pull you out.

Too Fast: The Metropolitans average speed is too slow for areas where the speed limits are above 45mph. For example: 36 EAST heading out of town past Lake Estes. The speed limit jumps to 55mph with no real room on the shoulder to ride. Far too dangerous.

Altitude too great: The scooters have carburetors which need air for the engines to run. Once those scooters get above 9,500ft, they just don't work right anymore. This is the main reason that METROPOLITANS ARE NOT ALOUD UP TRAIL RIDGE ROAD. This road surpasses the capabilities of the scooters. They'll just stop running all together. Deer Ridge Junction is as far west as you can go on 34.

THE YMCA: The YMCA is off limits unless you are a guest. This is by the request of the YMCA administrators.

With the exception of the YMCA, if you are reported by a ranger, a local, a police officer, or by any other means to be "OUT OF BOUNDS", you will lose $500 of your damage deposit per scooter. This fine is so steep because we are very serious about this issue.

There may be no visible damages to the scooter because you went out of bounds, but the life of all components to the scooter are comprimised.  In other words, because you took the scooter out of bounds (Glen Haven), it's not going to last as long as the other scooters.   Wear and tear on the scooter is an issue as if it were wrecked.  Any fees acrued from leaving bounds goes forth to all repairs of the scooters in the future.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF I'VE GONE OUT OF BOUNDS?

You are given a map, a verbal overview of the map, and asked if you have any questions about the map before you even touch a scooter.  BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS!  Example: On the way to Glen Haven there is a sign that warns truckers about steep tight switchbacks. "TRUCKS USE LOW GEARS". Common sense says, don't go down that hill.
