BIG RUCKUS: Can be on dirt roads, but it's too low for "off road" action. Not a dirt bike. Tires are not made for heavy gravel use. Paved roads are best.
1.) MARY'S LAKE: 35 min. (34, 36, 7, Peak View, Mary's Lake Road, 36, 34) This route takes you from 34 west toward town, to 36 east as if you were to head out of town, and then veer right on Route 7 west. 34 and 7 both have some breakdown lane/bike lane access for you to use when traffic is heavy. Take 7 to Peak View on the right. Just before this right turn, there is also a blue sign with a trailer on it indicating Mary's Lake RV Park down this road. Riding Peak View skirts you along Prospect Mountain on the right, and gives you views of peaks on the left. At the end of Peak View (at the RV Park) take a right hand turn to take Mary's lake road to 36 east (right) which brings you to the down town area and back to 34 where you would continue on back to ZootScoot. While at Mary's Lake, you can cruise around and check out the dramatic rock formations. BOUNDARY WARNING: - Do not take 36 east past Lake Estes out of town. Do not take Rt7 past Mary's Lake Road. The road up to the Long's Peak Area is to fast and steep for the Metropolitans.
2.) DEVIL'S GULCH: 30 min. (34, Dry Gulch/63, 61, Devil's Gulch/43, 36, 34) Now, we have a shortcut to Dry Gulch, so the only dealings with 34 you would have to tackle would be crossing the street. This route is a cruise past private ranch lands and open spaces with rolling hills and big vistas. Elk, cows, coyote, deer, badger, and ground squirrels are likely to be seen on this route. Once you get to the back half of this route, you will be rewarded to one of the best views of longs peak in Estes Park. This is a great route because even though the speed limit is 45mph most of the time, you may only see 4 cars the entire time you are out there. LOW ON TRAFFIC, BIG ON VIEWS. And when you end up downtown, the speed limit is only 25mph. A lot of people use this route to acclimate themselves to the scooters before they head up to the park. BOUNDARY WARNING: - Do not go to Glen Haven. If you turn right on Devil's gulch, about a mile down the road are 2 signs. One says "Trucks use low gears" and the other says "Glen Haven Fire Dist" Do not pass these signs. If you are reported to be in Glen Haven you will lose $500 of your deposit. The wear and tear on the scooters and the danger this area puts you in is serious.
3.) BEAVER MEADOW'S ENTRANCE TO FALL RIVER ENTRANCE: 1.5 hour. (34, 36, Rocky Mountain National Park Entrance, 34) Head 34 west, thru the downtown area and hang a left on 36/Moraine Ave. 36 takes you directly to the Beaver Meadow's Park Entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. From here you continue on 36 to 34/Deer Ridge Junction where you TAKE A RIGHT onto 34 down hill to the Sheep Lakes Area. (Just past the base of this hill, you can take a left turn to the Alluvial Fan water fall. There are also rest rooms back here) After the Sheep Lakes area, you will exit the park at the Fall River Entrances and 34 will take you on a swift downhill ride for most of the way back into Estes Park. Both the 34 business route, and 34 will take you to the downtown areas where you would continue back to ZootScoot. This route will give you breath taking views of the peaks along the Continental Divide, as well chances to see herds of elk, mountain sheep, and many other types of wildlife. BOUNDARY WARNING: - DO NOT take 34 past the Deer Ridge Junction with out making the right turn on 34 EAST. 34 WEST takes you up Trail Ridge Road which is out of bounds. This is extremely dangerous, and if you are reported by a ranger to be past Hidden Valley Picnic Area, you will lose $500 of your deposit. The wear and tear on the scooter, and the fact that the scooters will just not work at this altitude makes this the most dangerous area for you and the scooters to end up.
4.) BEAR LAKE: 1.5 hour (34,36, Beaver Meadows Entrance, Bear Lake Road, Beaver Meadows Entrance, 36, 34) Take 34 into town, 36/Moraine Road to the Beaver Meadows Entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park. After you pass the entrance gates, the first left is Bear Lake Road. This is not a loop, so once you get to the end of the road, you just turn around and come back the way you came. This is the most popular route taking you from 7,000+ft above sea level to 9,000+ft over about 9 miles distance, along some of the most dramatic peak views you'll get by pavement. Along the way, there are many trial heads, rest stops, picnic areas, lakes, and views. This road becomes very twisty turny, so please take it slow. Lots of sandy granite covers parts of this road and can cause you to wreck if you take turns to fast.
Also, access to the Fern Lake Trailhead is off Bear Lake Road at the Moraine Park turn, across from the Moraine Park Museum. Before the campground gates, you can take a left turn to Fern Lake access. This paved road will turn to dirt, and is the ONLY dirt road you can take the Metropolitan scooters on because it's so compact and easy to drive on. It's a beautiful ride to the trail head, and the hike to The Pool is a pretty easy 1.5 miles out leading you along the river.
